For any Portrait Photographer, New York proves to be an endless source of diverse faces, each with its own unique story to tell. Whether they are big name celebrities or just the ordinary people you happen upon on the street, you are bound to find a captivating bit of this city’s personality etched across each face. No doubt about it, North America’s largest city is one of the best places in the world to find faces that represent every culture from every corner of the world – an ever-changing palette of inspiration for portrait photographers to create masterpieces from. One easily recognizable face in any landscape is that of Dennis Haysbert. The strong facial features of this accomplished actor have taken centerstage in many feature films and several television dramas. Among these, he is well-known for his role as Pedro Cerrano in the Major League film trilogy and for portraying Secret Service Agent Tim Collin in the political thriller Absolute Power. As for television, many persons identify Haysbert from his roles in such critically acclaimed productions as The Unit and 24 in which he plays Sergeant Major Jonas Blane and U.S. Senator (moving on to become President) David Palmer, respectively. The story behind this portrait of Haysbert is a patriotic one and one any Portrait Photographer New York or elsewhere, would be proud to tell through the lens of his camera. I caught up with Haysbert in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as he was on his way to meet with US troops in Afghanistan. He made the visit in 2009 along with several other cast members from The Unit. In this portrait, his face is a mix of both determination and compassion. His expression seeming to relay more than just a simple understanding arising from his many experiences acting in the roles of servicemen. There is also a quality of true empathy with and respect for those he is on his way to meet.
