One of the best descriptions of New York comes from an American author and journalist, Tom Wolfe, who said, "Culture just seems to be in the air, like part of the weather." The pervasiveness of New York’s rich, often very tangible culture, is an element that Photographers in New York routinely use to their advantage. That’s because the varied displays of New York’s vivid culture form the perfect backdrop and frame for whatever the subject of your photograph may be. The state’s multitude of world famous locations include the exhilarating Watkins Glen International race track, the picturesque Thousand Islands archipelago and thunderous Niagara Falls. Of course, the cultural melting pot that is New York City, cannot be overlooked. Museum Mile, Carnegie Hall, Broadway and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade are just a few of the city’s many popular attractions. In fact, Times Square, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal and the Statue of Liberty are routinely listed among the most visited tourist attractions in the world. It is New Yorkers themselves, however, who are the most fascinating part of the state. Their enthusiasm for life seems rooted in the depths of their culture. It causes New Yorkers to possess the kind of boldness and resilience that neither horrific human acts, such as the 9/11 attacks, nor destructive forces of nature, as displayed by hurricane Sandy, can quell. This portrait seems symbolic of New Yorkers’ strength of character. Whether there are clouds or clear skies on the horizon, they face each new day with unwavering optimism, basking in the sunlight – very much like the portrait’s subject does. As one of the best Photographers in New York, I take pleasure in capturing that fundamental and uplifting spirit with my camera and putting it on display for all to see and become inspired by.
