Preparing for a photo session can be nerve-racking for clients, and unless you’re one of the best Headshot Photographers NYC has to offer – things can get pretty anxious for the guy behind the camera, too! From my years of experience as a photographer, I’ve learnt some basic strategies for ensuring each photo session is a success, regardless of what side of the lens you are on. Preparation is key, which is why many photographers will schedule a pre-shoot consultation, as long as time allows for one. It’s a great way to ensure that the client gets the chance to explain just what look they are after with the headshot before the camera is pointed at them. Talking is an effective way to release nervous energy, so conversation during the shoot helps by making clients feel more relaxed. Conversation can also set the mood for the desired outcome: serious, factual topics will make the client more introspective, putting thoughtfulness in their eyes and expression; while lighter topics, a funny story or even a couple of jokes make for a lighter mood. Effortlessly putting you at ease and setting the mood for the session is what expert Headshot Photographers (NYC or elsewhere) are good at. There are occasions on which the background forms an important part of a headshot, but even when this is so, a great photographer knows when and how to separate the client from the background so that the client remains the primary focus of the picture. A good example is this headshot of Trevor J. Matthews, CEO of Friends Provident Holdings (UK) Limited. It was taken in 2010 at the luxurious Millennium Hotel in Abu Dhabi and certainly, that hotel has magnificent indoor and outdoor settings that can easily take centerstage in any picture. For this headshot, however, all that was needed was a mix of professionalism and approachability – and I think we caught that very well!
