Planning for the future is as vitally important as remembering the lessons of the past. It is by doing both that we are able to make the most of the present. My work as a United Arab Emirates, UAE Photographer, always reminds me of this fact. That’s because the past, present and future seems to coexist beautifully side-by-side in this country, and nowhere is that more evident than in Abu Dhabi city. It is seen in the stunning skyscrapers such as Capital Gate, in the revered Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and in the mesmerizing Aldar headquarters building. This is a wonderfully planned city and its success as such has been acclaimed all over the world. Abu Dhabi has taken on the challenge of setting the standards by which future cities around the world will be designed. All aspects of the city were conceived long ago and the gentleman in the photo was a part of that process. Want to know why he seems so very moved by the award being bestowed on him? Read on! That gentleman is Abdul Rahman Hassanein Makhlouf, PhD, and the occasion is the 2009 Abu Dhabi Awards held at the impressive Emirates Palace Hotel. As a UAE Photographer, it was a function I was very eager to attend. The awards are given to persons (young and old, Emiratis, as well as non-Emiratis) whose actions contribute to the progress of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The spirit of the Abu Dhabi Awards is embodied in its theme “Goodness knows no limits”. Dr. Abdul Rahman was directly involved in the setting out a masterplan for Abu Dhabi’s development, the planning of the Abu Dhabi city center and the task of preparing for the city’s future development. And now, here he stands in that splendid city, receiving an award for his impressive and greatly appreciated contributions to it.
