Experience in your chosen field is always going to be a valuable asset, no matter if you are engaged in Event Photography in DC or like the gentleman in this picture, you are making waves in journalism in the Middle East. He is Martin Newland and he’s shown leading the 11 AM meeting of The National newspaper in Abu Dhabi. At the time, Newland was launch editor of The National and the paper had just completed its first year. Before this, he worked as home editor for The Daily Telegraph in England where he was first a reporter, then news editor. Currently, he is an advisor to Abu Dhabi Media, the government-owned company which launched The National. I think this photo manages to capture the essence of all that experience. From the intense look on Newland’s face to the positioning of the shoulders in the forefront of the image – you can’t help but think he has the rapt attention of all who are in the room. I worked with The National for several years and as a result gained quite a bit of experience myself, travelling around the region as a photojournalist. Before that, one of my earliest jobs was an internship with National Geographic Magazine, which actually still uses some of my work as in a 2016 piece by Wendy Koch titled “Why Solar and Wind Are Thriving Despite Cheap Fossil Fuels”. Of course, working with The New York Times, Time, Washington Post Sunday Magazine, Newsweek and Bloomberg Magazine (among many others) has helped a great deal, too, in term of my experience and the confidence I feel as a photographer. When it comes to taking on Event Photography in DC, all of those past experience ensure that I am able to give my clients the very best on all levels – professionally, technically and creatively.
