Boston Portrait Photographer

As a Boston Portrait Photographer, I don’t have to look far to find a scenario like the one depicted in this picture – a highly trained professional, surrounded by state-of-the-art equipment in a first-rate medical facility. Boston, after all, is home to various hospitals and research facilities which have consistently been ranked among the best in the world. Several of the city’s hospitals also serve as training grounds for the medical professionals of the future. They do this through linkages with the world-renowned educational institutions which help to make the capital city of Massachusetts an international hub for higher education. Yes, this portrait could well have been taken in beautiful and historic Beantown but it is in fact, the Urology Clinic at the Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al Ain is the country’s largest inland city and both the translation of its name (The Spring) and its nickname (The Garden City) speak to the wonders of natural beauty that can be found there. In Al Ain, we find Dr. Waleed Hassen, Chief of Urology at Tawam Hospital. The work of healthcare specialists such as Dr. Hassen takes on particular importance in light of a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO). The report reveals that cancer rates in Arab countries are expected to double by 2020. As a much-travelled Boston Portrait Photographer, I wanted the composition of this portrait to speak to the seriousness of Dr. Hassen’s job – no frills, no fuss, just what is needed to get that job done. Neither the bulky equipment nor the breadth of the room takes away from the fact that this is indeed a portrait. They instead act as the frame for the portrait’s subject. The splash of light illuminating the doctor’s face ensures where our focus is directed. What we see is a highly skilled medical professional ready and waiting to do what he does best – save lives.
